Eulexin (Flutamide)

General information

Eulexin belongs to a class of drugs known as anti-androgens (anti-testosterone). It works by blocking the effects of testosterone, thereby slowing the growth and spread of prostate cancer. This medication is used to treat men with prostate cancer, and is used with other medications and sometimes with radiation treatments.

Directions

Take Eulexin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The usual recommended dose for prostate cancer is 250 mg three times a day, about eight hours apart. Take your doses at about the same times each day to keep an even level of the drug in your bloodstream. It can be taken with or without food. Do not stop taking this medication without first talking to your doctor. Stopping your medications could allow the cancer to spread more rapidly.

Precautions

Before taking Eulexin you should talk with your doctor if you have liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver failure, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, allergic reaction to fava beans, blood disorder (methemoglobinemia or hemoglobin M disease), any allergies. This drug may rarely make you dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness. Avoid alcoholic beverages. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug.

Contraindications

You should not take Eulexin if you are allergic to it, flutamide, or any of the inactive components of this medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have severe liver disease.

Possible side effect

Get emergency medical help if you have hot flashes, diarrhea, skin rash, swelling of your lips, tongue, or face, increased skin sensitivity to sunlight, nausea, yellow skin or eyes, hives, loss of sex drive, impotence, lowered sperm count, abdominal pain, enlarged breasts, loss of appetite, greenish discoloration of the urine, rectal bleeding or inflammation, vomiting, blood in the urine, difficulty breathing, mood problems. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.

Drug interactions

Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: antifungal medications (fluconazole, ketoconazole, itraconazole), barbiturates (butalbital, phenobarbital, pentobarbital, amobarbital), protease inhibitors (atazanavir, indinavir, ritonavir, amprenavir), blood thinners (warfarin). Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.

Missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Overdose

If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are decreased activity, slow breathing, dizziness, watering eyes, upraised body hair, decreased appetite, vomiting, sedation.

Storage

Store the medicine at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
