Maxolon (Metoclopramide)

General information

Maxolon is a prokinetic drug that is used to treat ailments such as heartburn, gastric reflux disease and gastroparesis. Maxolon works by increasing the rate at which the stomach empties food into the intestines. It is used mostly for heartburn that occurs after a meal or during the daytime. Maxolon is also used in diabetic patients who have poor emptying of their stomachs (gastroparesis). This drug may also be used to prevent nausea or vomiting from chemotherapy or radiation treatments for cancer.

Directions

Take Maxolon exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication by mouth 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime, usually 4 times daily. Dosage is based on your weight, medical condition, and response to treatment. When taken for heartburn or reflux disease the drug is usually taken three times a day about 30 minutes before each meal. When used to treat nausea and vomiting, the medication may be given only once or when needed.

Precautions

Before taking Maxolon you should talk with your doctor if you have Parkinson’s disease, liver or kidney disease, cancer, diabetes, certain blood disorders, depression, asthma, high blood pressure, recent stomach surgery, heart failure. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive a car, or do any activity that requires alertness. Avoid drinking alcohol, it may increase certain side effects. Children and older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug.

Contraindications

Do not take Maxolon if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have epilepsy, bleeding, injury or obstruction in the stomach, pheochromocytoma.

Possible side effect

If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor promptly: dizziness, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, diarrhea, headache, agitation,mental or mood changes, decreased sexual ability, muscle spasms, swelling of the hands or feet, changes in menstruation, tremors, increased sweating, fast heartbeat, rash, swelling, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor immediately.

Drug interactions

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking. Tell your doctor if you are also taking: dopamine agonists (ropinirole, pergolide), pramlintide, tranquilizers (haloperidol, chlorpromazine, prochlorperazine), MAO inhibitors (moclobemide, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine), anticholinergic drugs (benztropine, scopolamine), narcotic pain medications (codeine, morphine), cyclosporine, levodopa, diphenhydramine, muscle relaxants, diazepam, zolpidem. Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them.

Missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Overdose

If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are drowsiness, disorientation, and extrapyramidal reactions.

Storage

Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
